Susan Baird Arter, 68 of Lakeland, Florida died on Friday due to a stroke, January 24, 2014, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was born on June 30, 1945 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to James and Vera Baird, who preceded her in death. She was married to Calvin James Arter, Sr. for 19 years, and was an active supporter of the Millbrook Playhouse, in Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, served on the board of directors, hosting professional actors and directors at her house each summer, and performed in several productions. She was an international flight attendant for Capital International Airlines for several years, most recently as Assistant Director of Flight Attendants. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed all types of travel, especially traveling on cruises including fundraising cruises to support the SPCA Florida, located in Lakeland, and was well known for her love of Dobermans. She volunteered as a candy-striper at Lock Haven Hospital, attended Lock Haven University, and enjoyed playing cards. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with friends at Grasslands Golf and Country Club and Clinton Country Club. Sue was a dedicated volunteer of the Sentimental Journey and the Piper Aviation Museum, traveling throughout the United States helping to raise funding for the new Piper Aviation Museum located in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Susan is survived by her loving husband, Calvin James Arter, Sr; sister, Ann Baird Nicotera; and children, John R. Spencer III, Jill Elizabeth Johnson, Calvin Arter, Jr and Barbara E.L. Arter, Ph.D. as well as four grandchildren. A memorial service for friends and family is being planned in Lakeland, Florida in the near future. A second memorial service will be held prior to the annual Sentimental Journey event in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Millbrook Playhouse, PO Box 161, Mill Hall, PA 17751.
