Shelton Bass, MD OB-GYN Shelton T. Bass, MD, age 88, passed away peacefully and went home to be with the Lord on Friday February 2, 2018 in Lakeland, Florida. Shelton was born on July 26, 1929 to Tempie and Lonnie D. Bass in Taylor’s Bridge, North Carolina. Shelton graduated from Wake Forest College, Summa Cum Laude, in 1950 and continued on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from Wake Forest Boman Gray School of Medicine in 1953, at the age of 23. Shelton went on to serve his country in the Air Force from 1955 until 1957 and rose to the rank of Captain during his service. Shelton was married to the love of his life, Marie Bass, on 12/29/56; they were married 58 years. He adored and cherished her until her passing. Shelton was a well known and beloved physician of Obstetrics and Gynecology for over 40 years in Lakeland, Florida. He presided as president at the practice of Clark and Daughtrey for many years and was in leadership roles throughout his time at Lakeland Regional Hospital. He was a member of the American Medical Association. He was accomplished in his community service endeavors. He achieved the highest honors that academics allowed and was a member of multiple academic and medical honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Epsilon Delta. He loved music, gardening, reading, and traveling as well as sports, especially college ball. He was a lifelong Christian. He loved to learn and to teach. Shelton supported those who wanted to further their education or better their lives. He was generous with his time often visiting the elderly and infirm. He loved his profession, cherished his friends but most of all he loved his family. He was a student of life who accomplished all he endeavored with hard work and brilliance. Shelton was predeceased by his spouse, Marie Bass; his daughter, Lisa Metzler; his parents, Tempie and Lonnie D. Bass; his siblings Crotia Blanchard, Burnice Bass, Newberry Bass, Crafton Bass, Johnson Bass, Howard Bass, Irma Peterson; and his sister-in-law Patti Rodgers. He is survived by his children, Michelle Buijsman (Paul), Tom Bass (Howard), Tempie Bass (Paul); his grandchildren Leah (Al), Kathryn (Michael), Ginny (Anthony), Marcie (Amanda), Trinity, and Tucker, and 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings Alease Compton, Lonnie Jackson Bass, Alice Jane Royal, Milton Bass, and Carl Bass; his brother-in-law Larry Tempest, and multiple nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Lakeland, Florida. Reverend Dr. Reid Hensarling will be officiating. He will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Heart Association, Vitas Hospice or the charity of your choice. The family expresses gratitude to the caregivers that helped our Father during his last years, especially the loving care provided by Jacqueline, Julie, Alice and Lorraine, as well as his hospice RN, Aniella.
