Samuel Vernon Houghtaling

Samuel Vernon Houghtaling died peacefully on November 26, 2023. He was born in Reese, Michigan, on September 6th, 1928, to W. Vernon and Pearl (Hurst) Houghtaling.

Sam graduated from Bay City Central High School and went on to graduate from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics. Sam married Patsy A. Baggott in Chicago, IL. He was a Lieutenant Colonel while serving in the Navy. They were married on June 22, 1957. Sam and Patsy moved to their permanent home in Lakeland, Florida in 1960.

Sam was active at the Talbot House for over 30 years on the board. Sam is survived by his sons, Steven (Mary Alice) Houghtaling; and Stewart (Lori) Houghtaling; and Kimberly Houghtaling. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren: Kent, Jordan, Scott, Jr., and Kristine Pate. In addition, Sam has 7 great grandchildren.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Patsy and their son, Scott C. Houghtaling. Sam was a dedicated member of The Chapel in The Grove for over 60 years where he enjoyed singing in dedication to the service of his lord.

Viewing at Heath Funeral Chapel, 328 S. Ingraham Avenue, Lakeland, FL 33801, will be on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Presbyterian Chapel in the Grove, 1540 New Jersey Road , Lakeland, FL 33803.
