LCDR Robert "Bob" G. Reed. USN (Ret.) passed away on October 5, 2023 in Lakeland, FL. He was 94 years old.
In his later years he often said his life was blessed, but truly we who knew him were the blessed. As a dedicated husband (70 years), father, brother, grandfather, Naval Officer, teacher, coach, friend, mentor and volunteer in his churches and communities he made a difference in many lives.
Born in Joplin, MO, he was the son of Floyd and Ilah. He graduated from Joplin High School (1947) and the United States Naval Academy (1952).
Bob was proud to be a Naval Officer or a "Jack of All Trades". During his 20-year career he served on a number of ships and seven years at the Pentagon. He served as Navigator on the USS Long Beach (CGN-9). He was grateful it was one of the first ships with a satellite navigation system. One role at the Pentagon was Oceanographic Programs Officer.
Upon retirement in 1972, Bob and his wife Barbara settled in Alexandria, VA. He taught math and served as Math Department Coordinator at Potomac High School. He was an NEA Union Rep. In addition, he was very active at church, serving as an elder, a deacon and on the congregational care committee and volunteering time for Koinania, and at Miriam's Kitchen in D.C.
During 2002, Bob and Barbara were blessed to move into the Carillon Lakes community in Lakeland, FL. Bob is well known for founding the community pancake breakfasts. He also volunteered First Presbyterian Church distributing and maintaining hearing aids and organizing Game days. They still play by "Bob's Rules."
Preceded in death by his parents and sister Sharon. Bob is survived by wife Barbara, children (spouse) Robert (Marie), Karen, and James, grandchildren Jon and Rebecca, sister Jane (Don), many loving nephews, nieces and extended family.
