Richard Benton (Dick) Turnbull, Sr.

March 20, 1934 — July 1, 2014

Lakeland- Dick Turnbull died on July 1, 2014 at Lakeland Hospice House of complications from cancer. He was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania on March 20, 1934 to Clara Howard Turnbull and Thomas Turnbull III. He was the youngest of three children, and as a youth enjoyed spending his summers in the Adirondacks swimming, hiking and boating. Dick attended prep school at Ridley College in St. Catharine""s, Ontario and the Mount Hermon School in Gill, Massachusetts. Dick loved music and sang his entire life. He attended Carnegie Tech, served in the US Army and graduated from Washington and Jefferson University in Washington, PA with an Accounting degree. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Dick married Mary ""Sue"" Wiley of Washington, PA on October 31, 1958, living in Pittsburgh, PA until moving to Lakeland, Florida in 1969, raising two children and celebrated Halloween Anniversaries together until Sue""s passing in 2000. Dick then found new life, meeting Mercedes Rivera while singing in the Church Choir. They were married in 2001 and cherished each and every moment they had together. Dick is preceded in death by his brother Thomas Turnbull IV and survived by his sister Silence Turnbull Roth of Nashville, TN and his children Richard B. ""RB"" Turnbull, Jr., Carolyn Turnbull Southworth, and grandchildren: Brianna Ariel Southworth, Kayliegh Southworth and Stephanie Southworth, Katharine Mary Turnbull and Richard ""Benton"" Turnbull III, step children Naomi Tillett and Raymond Rivera and step grandchildren Fredy Martinez and Jessica Martinez. Dick always had a positive attitude, a smile and a joke for everyone he met. He is truly now experiencing one of his favorite sayings that he would use to describe living in Lakeland: ""JAPDIP- Just Another Perfect Day In Paradise!"" A Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Lakeland, July 7th at 2 pm , Reception to follow at the Social Hall.
