Richard Allen Armstrong

RICHARD (""Rich"") ALLEN ARMSTRONG passed away quietly on August 16, 2016, at the age of 94. He was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, on July 12, 1922, the second son of Edgar Manley Armstrong and Bertha Wheaton Armstrong, who predeceased him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Marjorie Cameron Armstrong, of Lakeland; his three children, Jennifer (Gail) West of Miami, Jill (Terry) Schafer of Rochester, Michigan, and Lee (Beth) Armstrong formerly of Villa Rica, Georgia, and recently of Ormond Beach, Florida; and his four grandchildren, Scott (Katie) Schafer, Sara (Pall) Kornmayer, Allee Armstrong and Cameron (""Cammie"") Armstrong and one great grandson, Oliver Sloan Schafer. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Marian Armstrong Garvey, and was predeceased by his brother, Donald E. Armstrong and sister, Janet Armstrong Price. Many ""favorite"" nieces and nephews who have fond memories of Uncle Rich. Rich""s college days at Carnegie Institute of Technology (currently Carnegie-Mellon University) were interrupted by his service in World War II. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant in the US Navy and served most of the War in the Pacific Theater on the USS Long Island. He returned to Pittsburgh to finish college and received a B.S. in Engineering. Rich spent his entire career with Ford Motor Company in various positions as a managing engineer at plants and offices in the Greater Detroit area and in Cincinnati, Ohio. After retirement, Marj and Rich spent time in Savannah, Georgia, Tuscon, Arizona, and Lakeland, Florida. Rich was an avid (if not expert) golfer and played until he was 90 years old. He was also an experienced bridge player and card player. Family get-togethers usually included golf and card games. He was well-known by friends and family for his sense of humor. Rich and Marj are longtime members of First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland. Services will be in the Chapel there on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11:00 am.
