Mary Lou Maples passed away Sunday, October 27, 2024 at the age of 96. She was born April 15, 1928 in Louisville, Kentucky to Charles and Viola Hagan. She was the oldest of 8 children.
She moved to Lakeland, Florida in 1972. Mary loved working and being around people, and throughout her life she held various positions in retail. She worked for the Louisville Fairgrounds, Cloth World and ActMedia in Lakeland, and volunteered at voting polls during elections. She also owned and managed furnished apartments in her home.
She is survived by her loving children, Lonnie Hurt (Dianna), and Donna Lane (Sonny) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Lori Scilluffo (Jim), and Pam Penix (Mark), of Lakeland, 3 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and her sister, Betty Scherrer of Lakeland. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Scott Hurt, of Louisville, Kentucky.
Mary loved to read her bible and pray for those who needed prayer. She also loved to sew, listening to country music, and host gatherings. But her favorite thing to do was to spend time and enjoy stories and laughter with her children, grandchildren, and family. Her family was the most important thing to her, and she was extremely devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was always smiling and everyone loved her joyful personality, and those that met her could not believe she was 96 years old, which always made her smile.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 31, from 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 210 West Lemon Street, Lakeland, with funeral mass following at 10:00 a.m.
