Juanita M. Hicks

Juanita M. Hicks, 84 Teacher Juanita Moore Hicks of Waxhaw, NC passed away on December 23, 2013 due to complication s from a stroke. She was 84 years old. She was born in Orlando, Florida on August 20, 1929 to Rosa and O.M. Moore. Her family moved to Lake Wales, Florida later that year. She was a graduate of Lake Wales High School in 1947 and received a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education and Media in 1951 from Florida State University. While at FSU she became a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and was elected to Kappa Delta Pi education honorary. Juanita was also a member of the Baptist Student Union. Juanita taught school in Lake Wales for two years. After her marriage to K. Quentin Hicks in 1953, they moved to Lakeland where she completed 32 years of teaching in Polk County schools. In 1965, Juanita was honored with the Teacher of The Year Award from the Lakeland Women\'s Club. She and her husband became members of the First Baptist Church in Lakeland and served side by side on the Youth Committee for four years and as superintendents of the Adult Four Sunday School department for 20 years. She was also an active member of the Women\'s Missionary Union. Several years after her husband\'s death in 1997, Juanita moved to Windermere, Florida to live with her sister, Celeste Alligood. In 2010, Juanita moved back to Lakeland and became a resident at Arbor Oaks Assisted Living Center. Two years later, Juanita moved to Waxhaw, North Carolina to be closer to her son, Keith and his family. Juanita is preceded by her husband, K. Quentin Hicks. She is survived by her son, Keith Quentin Hicks and wife Karen and four granddaughters, Katelyn, Kacie, Lauren and Victoria all of Waxhaw, North Carolina. She is also survived by her sister, Celeste Alligood of Windermere and a large and loving extended family. A Memorial Service will be held at Heath Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 3 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held for family members at Oak Hill Cemetery later that day. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts be made to the Florida Baptist Children\'s Home at 1015 Sykes Blvd. Lakeland, Florida 33815.
