Jan (Wegman) Katenkamp, 80, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away on March 5, 2025. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 7, 1944, she grew up on a farm on Guerley Road, graduated from Seton High School and lived in Western Hills until moving to Cape Coral, Florida in 1979.
She loved sports, playing softball and volleyball in her youth and tennis and golf later in life. While she was one of the kindest and most accepting people you would ever meet, she was a fierce competitor. She was part of many winning teams over the years accumulating dozens of trophies, especially in tennis.
She also loved animals, riding horses over the years and having many canines as treasured companions. She would be disappointed if Willie, Duke, Biscuit, and Lily were not mentioned here.
She married the love of her life, Donald Earl Katenkamp in 1969 and they were married for 36 years before his passing in 2006.
Jan had a great sense of humor, bringing joy to everyone she interacted with. She had some unusual ‘addictions’ including a multi-year struggle with coffee nips and orange tootsie pops.
She was a tremendous example of love and tolerance; traits that are increasingly rare in this world. While she was a devout Catholic and had her own views, she saw everyone as an individual and looked beyond religion, ethnicity, race, politics and every other possible stereotype. She found the good in everyone and had meaningful connections with people from all walks of life. She also had tremendous emotional depth. During her years working at St. Andrew Catholic Church, she often commented that she would cry at weddings and funerals for complete strangers.
Jan is predeceased by her husband, Donald Katenkamp, brothers Donnie and Clarence (Brud) Wegman; sister Dorothy (Doke); and step-daughter Donna Katenkamp. She is survived by her sister Marilyn (Noon) Moll, sister-in-law Jane (Kleiman) Wegman, son Erik Katenkamp, daughter-in-law Tasha Katenkamp, grandchildren Seth, Ella, and Alex, step-children Carolyn Goldrainer, Mark (Carol) Katenkamp, Tom (Susan) Katenkamp, Ann (Ed) Ohmer and many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 3450 Lumardo Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio 45238 on March 21, 2025 at 10:30 am with visitation beginning at 9:30 am.
