George L. Stansbury III Lakeland - George L. Stansbury III, a man of service to God and his nation, passed peacefully on January 17, surrounded by family and friends; he has joined Nome, his wife of 62 years. Born in Akron, Ohio on August 26, 1929, he grew up in Hudson, Ohio and Fort Myers Beach, FL. He attended Western Reserve Academy in Hudson. Upon graduation, he spent the summer on an ore ship on the Great Lakes. He began attending Florida Southern College in the fall and was a founding member of Florida Gamma chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After graduation in 1951, he joined the Navy for the next 23 years, including tours in Korea and Vietnam, retiring as a Commander. He returned to Lakeland with his family in 1974 to teach at Florida Southern College in the School of Business. He worked with the Central Florida Regional Planning Council and returned to teaching at Webber College before fully retiring. He and Nome pursued their love of travel visiting Asia, Europe, South America, and all four corners of the U.S.; often on the road less traveled. He enjoyed running and camping; hiking many times along the Appalachian Trail and hiked the 1898 Gold Rush Chilkoot Trail in Alaska 100 years after his grandfather’s journey. He was in Kiwanis and a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church for 43 years where he served on the vestry and in other roles. He is survived by his sons and their wives: George L. Stansbury IV (Naples), John W. Stansbury (Dena), (Manassas, VA), James D. Stansbury (Alyce Lee), (Tallahassee) and grandchildren: Thomas, Leah, and John William. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church where services will be held Saturday, January 20, 3:00 P.M.
