George Laird Hunt, D.D., 94 Presbyterian Minister Lakeland - Dr. George Laird Hunt, retired Presbyterian minister, died on October 15, 2012 in Lakeland, Florida. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 11, 1918. He earned his A.B from Maryville College, Maryville, Tennessee in 1940; his B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey in 1943 and was honored with a doctor of divinity degree by Maryville College in 1958. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. in 1943. George Hunt married Mary Alice Minear in 1943. They had three children, Laurence Hunt of Lakeland, Florida, Bruce Hunt of Dover, Delaware, and Marcia Beth Hunt of Montclair, New Jersey. They had six grandchildren. Mary Alice died in 2001. George Hunt married Ruth Boynton in 2005. He was blessed with three step children and several step grand children through Ruth Boynton Hunt. Dr. Hunt served several pastorates in Delaware, Pennsylvania"" and as the head of staff at Fanwood Presbyterian Church in Fanwood, New Jersey from 1963-1978. He served on the staff of the Board of Christian Education of the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. from 1948-1960 focused on adult work, including stewardship, leadership development, and editor of the adult curriculum and Bible studies for Presbyterian Women. While serving the Fanwood Church, Dr. George Hunt also was Executive Secretary of the Consultation on Church Union from 1962-1968. Dr. Hunt became editor of The Presbyterian Outlook in Richmond, Virginia in 1979, serving until he was honorably retired in 1988. Dr. Hunt authored several books, numerous articles, book reviews and had sermons published. He continued to be a contributing editor to the Outlook after his retirement. He and Mary Alice then moved to Florida Presbyterian Homes, Lakeland, Florida. They were both active in Westminster Presbyterian Church, where they sang in the choir. He was chairman of the History Committee at the Homes for six years and librarian there, significantly reorganizing the library. He was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Homes"" board. He and Mary Alice travelled in Hawaii, the Holy Land, Europe as well as in their motor home in the U.S. Dr. George Hunt""s memorial service will be in the Glenn Moore Chapel at Florida Presbyterian Homes on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 2:30 pm. Dr. Barbara Booth-Jarmin and the Reverends Jean and Bill Cooley will officiate. The family asks that donations be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
