Esther Pauline Schlei, affectionately known as “Mom”, "G-dawg" and "GG-Dawg," passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at the age of 89 in her home in Lakeland, Florida. Esther was born on August 30, 1934, to John and Maria Klein.
She and her 11 siblings grew up in South Lakeland on Klein Road at “The Ole Homestead”.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, Eugene Schlei, in the year 2000. Esther and Eugene were the founders of Lakeland’s beloved Edelweiss Café and The House of Cheese. They also owned and operated Schlei Carpet Cleaning.
Esther was a devout member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church throughout her entire life where she cherished singing alto in the choir.
Esther is survived by her loving daughters, Paula Schlei (Andrew Wexler) and Teresa Thrush, four grandchildren: Jacqueline, Jeremy, Julie, and Jenna, she was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Arya and Elliot, her sisters: Edna and Lillian, and her brother Walter.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 10:00 am at Fitzgerald Cemetery.
Esther will always be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her dedication to Jesus, and her vibrant spirit that touched the lives of anyone who ever met her.
