Dr. Ellie Maria Hartog, 81 Physician Lakeland - Dr. Ellie Maria Hartog died on October 21, 2012 at her home in Lakeland at the age of 81 due to cancer. She was a physician. She was born May 4, 1931, in Haarlem, the Netherlands. In 1951, the Hartog family moved to Aruba, Dutch West Indies. After working as a teacher and elementary school principal in Aruba, she came to the US in 1958 to further her education, and graduated from the University of Miami, School of Medicine in June 1964, one of only five women in the graduating class. She finished her residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology at the University of Miami School of Medicine in June 1969. She was Chief of OB/GYN department at Polk General Hospital in Bartow from 1969 till 1979, when she opened her private practice in Lakeland, (currently known as Lakeland OB-GYN). She retired in 1996. She was a life time member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection. She is survived by a sister, Joke Vanderschoot, of Milbridge Maine, and by a brother Ruud Hartog, of Tierra Verde, Florida, and 7 nieces and nephews. Viewing will be at Heath Funeral Chapel in Lakeland from 5-7 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2012. A funeral Mass will be held at the Church of the Resurrection on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 10 am. Interment will be at Oak Hill Burial Park at a future date. Memorials may be made to the cancer research activity of your choice or to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823.
