We remember with deep affection Beverly Capps Lyon, who passed away on January 19, 2024 after a brief illness. Born on September 8, 1936, in Atlanta, Georgia, Beverly's life was a journey of love, dedication, and adventure. She was predeceased by her husband, Gene, and her parents, Dr., and Mrs. C. Glynn Capps of Plant City.
After graduating from Plant City High School, Beverly went to Florida State University where she earned a degree in education and later continued her education with a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Bucknell University. She retired from Polk County Public Schools after 30 years, primarily as a junior/middle school social studies teacher, most recently at Lakeland Highlands Middle School, where, in 1991, she was recognized as Teacher of the Year. She was also active in American Businesswomen’s Association for many years.
Beverly was married to her beloved husband, Gene, for almost 58 years, until his passing in 2018. With Gene, she nearly fulfilled her dream of visiting all 50 states, and their international travels took them to diverse destinations across much of Europe, including England, France, Germany, Austria, Russia, Italy, and prior to reunification, East Germany. Further, she and Gene were frequent travelers to Canada, where they spent time fished with lifelong friends. Fueling her love of travel, she and Gene were longtime volunteers with Sun & Fun Fly-in, and could be found in the international tent, sharing their love of central Florida with visitors from around the globe.
Beverly found a spiritual home at First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland, where she dedicated her time and heart to various roles. She volunteered as a greeter, ensuring that everyone who entered the church felt a sense of belonging. Beverly actively participated in several church groups, fostering connections and friendships with fellow members. Her involvement at First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland was a testament to her faith and her desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
In addition to her church involvement, Beverly shared Gene's passion for the Lakeland Rifle and Pistol Club. Her dedication to the club spanned decades, as she served as an officer and a member of the board, demonstrating her leadership skills and commitment to its mission. Beverly's background as an educator allowed her to apply her teaching skills to an unexpected domain – firearms training. After retirement and alongside Gene, she played an integral role in conducting firearms safety and concealed carry courses. Her commitment to ensuring responsible firearm ownership and safety was a reflection of her desire to empower others with knowledge.
Over the years, her hobbies extended to her participation in a local bowling league and to her lifelong love of card games, making her a popular member of several “bridge clubs” and other card groups. She really loved the friendly competition, but never more than when she won! Other social activities included her “wine group,” where she shared her love for fine wines, travel, and the deep friendships that developed; and the “6-pack,” a group of retired teachers that got together frequently for lunch and other outings. She also looked forward to the “breakfast club,” a gathering of friends for morning meals and conversation.
Beverly's legacy is carried on by her loving family. She is survived by her daughter, Gigi Lyon Devanney (John) of Bel Air, MD, and her son, Bruce Lyon (Tamara Sakagawa) of Winter Haven, Florida. Her five grandchildren were a source of immense pride and joy, and she was always eager to share news of their many accomplishments. Without doubt, U.S. Army Captain Drew Devanney, Danny Devanney of Boston, Massachusetts, Lizzie Devanney of San Francisco, and Raiden Lyon and Renzo Lyon of Winter Haven, Florida, were the lights of her life.
Services will be held Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland.
In memory of both Beverly and Gene, the family has established an endowed scholarship at Florida Southern College for a deserving student pursuing a career in education. They suggest that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Eugene L. Lyon Family Scholarship Fund at Florida Southern College, 111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland, FL 33801.
Beverly's legacy is one of kindness, passion for education, and deep connections with those around her. She will be dearly missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew her.
