Barbara Claire Skeen Lakeland – Barbara Claire Skeen, age 86, passed away at home in Highland City, FL, on Sunday, September 16, 2018. Barbara was born on November 11, 1931, to parents Frances and Ross Gunning in Lakeland, FL. A graduate of Florida Southern College, she was a school teacher for many years at Highland City Elementary. Though retired from her long-time position at the school, she was still teaching Sunday school at her home church, First Baptist Church of Highland City. Barbara Skeen was a well-respected and honest woman. She loved God and her family. She was very influential and true in the lives of those who knew her. She stood firm in her beliefs and was always ready to lend a hand. Barbara was very smart, always reading to gain new information. Barbara’s favorite activities included shopping and dining out with her family. She loved to read and study her Bible. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She loved a good deal and she loved a good visit, always standing outside to share hugs and wave good-bye. Barbara loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always making time for them and enjoying their company. She will be greatly missed by her family; they loved her so much and will never forget the many memories they shared with her. She will always have a special place in their hearts as they anticipate the day they will see her again when they live together in their eternal home with Jesus Christ. Barbara was predeceased by her spouse of 54 years, Jack B. Skeen, and by her granddaughter, Ciara Skeen. She is survived by her children, James Skeen of Highland City and John Skeen of Polk City, FL; grandchildren, Ashley, Alisha, Jeremy, and Sunshine; and great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Chyanne, Hunter, and Kamry. A graveside service will be held Friday, September 21, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Burial Park, 4620 U.S. Highway 98 South, Lakeland, FL 33812. Following the service, the family will welcome friends at First Baptist Church of Highland City, 5410 Yarborough Lane, Lakeland, FL 33812.
