Aubrey Dane Sawyer, Jr. MD Lakeland " A. Dane Sawyer, Jr. MD died on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Hawthorne Inn of Lakeland Assisted Living Facility, after a long battle with Alzheimer""s disease. Dr. Sawyer was born on November 10, 1936, in Jacksonville, FL and was the son of Margaret and Aubrey Sawyer. He attended Robert E. Lee High School and then obtained a B.S. Degree from the University of Florida in 1958, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. During the summers he served as a counselor and swimming coach at Y.M.C.A. Camp Greenville in Cedar Mountain, NC (He loved doing this!). He married Jo Lee Blondheim on December 29, 1961, and obtained his MD degree from the University Of Florida College Of Medicine in June, 1962. He subsequently did his Internship in Pediatrics at Shands Teaching Hospital, Gainesville, FL (1963) and completed his Residency in Pediatrics at the University of Mississippi Hospital at Jackson, MS in June, 1965. He served in the U.S. Army at the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Stewart, GA as Chief of Pediatric Service from 1965- 1967. Their son, Dane III was born at Shands in 1963 and daughter, Amy Lynne, was born at Ft. Stewart in 1965. Dane moved his family to Lakeland in 1967 joining Boulware, Johnson and Boulware Pediatric Group. The group, including Dr. Ronal Haskins, joined the Watson Clinic in September, 1985. Dane was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Academy""s Section on Adolescent Health. He served on the Executive Committee of the Florida Pediatric Society from 1986 " 1992. He was a Past President and Board Member of The Learning Resource Center, Board member of the Central Florida Speech & Hearing Center, consultant to Children""s Medical Services and a member of the Polk County, Florida and American Medical Associations. Dane was baptized and confirmed at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Jacksonville, FL, and became a member of St. David""s Episcopal Church in Lakeland from 1967 " 1991. He moved his membership to All Saints"" Episcopal Church, Lakeland, in 1991, and faithfully served as a member of the Vestry and on the Boards of the Thrift Store and the Child Development Center. Dane loved the Florida beaches and vacationed there with his family. He enjoyed fishing and boating, spending much time at Ozello, his favorite spot! In addition, he also loved the Carolina Mountains " especially in the fall when the leaves were turning. Of course, he loved the football season and ""His"" Florida Gators! He was avid reader " historical novels were his forte"". Dane truly loved his church, his family, his patients and his friends. He and his family wanted to convey a special ""thanks"" to Kim Broom and the Hawthorne Inn staff as well as to the members of All Saints"" Episcopal Church Order of St. Luke and to Good Shepherd Hospice of Auburndale. Dane was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Amy Lynne Hennessey. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, JoLee; son, Dane, III( Pamela) of Rose Hill, VA.; sister, Suzi Loyd (Jim) of Atlanta, GA.; brother, Thomas Sawyer (Duncan) of Jacksonville and aunt, Shirley Winterburn of Jacksonville. He has five grandchildren, Neland Sawyer (Amanda), Abbey Sawyer and Maggie, Alexandra and Jack Hennessey. He has one great granddaughter, Amy Sawyer.
