Ann S. Matthews

ANN S. MATTHEWS, 92 Insurance Agent Ann S. Matthews, 92, passed away November 19, 2014, due to cancer. Elizabeth Ann was born May 26, 1922, in Clarksville, Florida, the daughter of James Inman Smith and Anna Lee Attaway Smith. With her family, she came to Lakeland shortly after she was born. Ann worked in the insurance industry for 30 years and was Polk County Insurance Woman of the Year in 1968. She served as a PTA secretary at Dixieland Elementary and Southwest Junior High and Cub Scout den mother at Dixieland. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob "Jack" Pope Matthews, Jr.; a former husband David C. Pearce, Jr.; three brothers, Edgar Inman Smith (Estelle), Joseph William Smith (Helen); and Tillman Courtney Smith (Rose); and her sisters, Verna Smith Carlisle Perez (Tony), Lida Smith Odom (Lamar), and Vera Smith Carroll (Marvin). She is survived by two sons, David C. Pearce, III (Marja-Liisa) of Lakeland, and Jacob (Jack) P. Matthews, III (Pat) of Keller, Texas; five grandchildren, Gwen Pearce Tedder (Doug), Cathy Pearce Sloan (David), Meghan Matthews Davenport (Levi), Jacob "Jake" Matthews, IV (Tatum), and Ben Matthews; four great-grandsons, and many loving nieces and nephews.
