On Friday, February 3, 2023, James Scott Newsome Sr. of Lakeland, Florida, 58, passed away peacefully after a battle with stomach and liver cancer. He was at home surrounded by loved ones.
James was born on September 16, 1964, in Marquette County, Michigan, to Lloyd and Tonya Newsome. One year to the day after graduating from Cass City High School in Michigan, he joined the United States Army. At the conclusion of his military service, James worked for various companies driving delivery trucks. He loved driving. He drove trucks and his beloved Harley Davidson and filled his drive time with some of his favorite artists; Prince, Bob Seger, and Nickelback.
James' spent his off time outdoors. Whether he was mowing on his John Deere tractor, riding his bicycle, or his Harley Davidson around beautiful Lake Hollingsworth, he always enjoyed being on the go. His gentle nature could also be seen in his love for all animals and the way they responded to him. If he was sitting still on the sofa, you would probably find one of his cats, Sally, lying on his chest.
James loved all things football but, anyone who knew James knew of his devotion to The University of Michigan. Go Blue!! He was a devoted fan of the Wolverines and planned his weekends to watch their games. He was also a Detroit Lions and NFL fan and enjoyed watching WWE wrestling.
James is survived by his loving wife, Amy Michelle Solomon, whom he married on December 28, 2019. The two enjoyed much happiness in Lakeland, Fl these past few years. Amy provided constant care for James during his brief, but very difficult illness. She ensured that his wishes were honored and that he had excellent care to the end. James adored Amy and anyone who saw them together knew that instantly.
James is also survived by five daughters from a previous marriage: Nicole Marcelle Newsome, Christine Danielle Newsome, Brittany Michelle Newsome, Alexis Gabrielle Newsome, and Melissa Noelle Newsome, and one grandson, Chase Alexander Newton, all of Gloucester, Virginia. Mother-in-law, Lucia Lewis Solomon of Lakeland, Florida. Father-in-law, William Carl Solomon of Newport News, Virginia. Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law, Michael and Mary Lucia Spake, nephew, Henry Lewis Spake, and nieces, Kathryn Hazel Spake, Mary Clare Spake, and Vivian Elizabeth Spake, all of Lakeland, Florida. He was also loved by many cousins who will treasure his memory.
James was predeceased in death by his parents, Lloyd James Newsome and Tonya Mae Walker Newsome, and his son from the previous marriage, James Scott Newsome Jr.
James’ condition became very complex late in his cancer journey and the family would like to thank the Lakeland Regional Health Oncology floor and staff, the Hollis Cancer Center staff and physicians, and Good Shepherd Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.
